Take a moment to notice the * at the beginning of various portions of the order of service. The * indicates the place where it is inappropriate to enter or leave the sanctuary because it marks a time of prayer or respect for the Word of the Lord. Please be considerate of others around you by honoring these notations.

In great love He was slain for us and by His blood He ransomed us for God. As our substitute, carrying our sin, the Holy Lamb of God received the punishment that we deserved! And as He, Himself, cried out, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). As we marvel at the forgiveness He won for us at Calvary, we also give thanks for the means by which He brings it to us still today. As we receive Holy Communion during this Lenten season, guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor or an elder before the service. For Scriptural reasons, we practice close communion. If you do not belong to a congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we invite you to join our communion fellowship. For details, please speak or make an appointment with Pastor Kane through the church office (319) 235-6705.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER-

CANTATE (SING)

Jesus Promises to Send His Holy Spirit, the Helper

April 28, 2024

AS WE GATHER: Though Jesus has departed from us visibly to the right hand of the Father who sent Him, yet this is to our advantage.  For Jesus—who is Lord over all creation, who intercedes for us before the Father, who is preparing a place for us in heaven—has sent the Helper, the Spirit of Truth (John 16:5-15).  “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights” through Jesus Christ (James 1:17).  The Holy Spirit helps us by taking what is Christ’s and declaring it to us.  In the Word of truth, the Spirit works repentance and delivers to us the forgiveness of sins, the righteousness of Christ, and Victory over the devil.  For the ruler of this world is judged and defeated by the cross.  Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we have been brought forth to new life in Him who is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.  Confident of our resurrection with Christ we confess, “Be hold, God is my salvation;  I will trust, and will not be afraid” (Is. 12:2).

Review of

THE AUGSBURG CONFESSION

Article XXVII: Of Monastic Vows. (cont.)

22] What objection can be raised to this? Let men extol the obligation of a vow as much as they list, yet shall they not bring to pass that the vow 23] annuls the commandment of God. The Canons teach that the right of the superior is excepted in every vow; [that vows are not binding against the decision of the Pope;] much less, therefore, are these vows of force which are against the commandments of God.

24] Now, if the obligation of vows could not be changed for any cause whatever, the Roman Pontiffs could never have given dispensation for it is not lawful for man to annul an obligation which is simply 25] divine. But the Roman Pontiffs have prudently judged that leniency is to be observed in this obligation, and therefore 26] we read that many times they have dispensed from vows. The case of the King of Aragon who was called back from the monastery is well known, and there are also examples in our own times. [Now, if dispensations have been granted for the sake of securing temporal interests, it is much more proper that they be granted on account of the distress of souls.]

27] In the second place, why do our adversaries exaggerate the obligation or effect of a vow when, at the same time, they have not a word to say of the nature of the vow itself, that it ought to be in a thing possible, that it ought to be free, 28] and chosen spontaneously and deliberately? But it is not unknown to what extent perpetual chastity is in the power of man. 29] And how few are there who have taken the vow spontaneously and deliberately! Young maidens and men, before they are able to judge, are persuaded, and sometimes even compelled, to take the vow. Wherefore 30] it is not fair to insist so rigorously on the obligation, since it is granted by all that it is against the nature of a vow to take it without spontaneous and deliberate action.Catechism Review          Question #41

Prayer of the Church

Fifth Sunday of Easter (Cantate)

28 April 2024

Gracious Lord, You have revealed Your righteousness in the sight of the nations: Christ Jesus, Your holy arm. By His death and resurrection, You have worked salvation. Strengthen the song of Your Church. Give skill to musicians and poets, and give boldness to Your congregation in this and every place to sing the eternally new song of Christ. Lord,in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

You have promised the gift of Your Spirit to make known to us all truth and to keep us in Your Word. Grant to us, O Lord, faithful pastors who will teach Your Word and devoted church workers who will serve us in Your name. Bless those preparing for church work vocations, and inspire many to follow Your call. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Father of lights, every good and perfect gift comes down from You. By Your Spirit, put away from our families and communities every hasty or harsh word, together with all filthiness and rampant wickedness, and instead give us patience and humility toward our neighbors. Since You have brought us forth by the Word of Your truth, so let us speak truthfully with one another in meekness as beloved brothers. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Almighty God, Your Son acknowledged Satan as ruler of this world and its ways, yet one whose reign is judged and whose time is short. Beat back his lies and deadly work, that the order of Your creation may be seen. Give us good government and leaders who are both honest and faithful. Even so, let us look eagerly for Your Son’s return, and let that be quickly. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Hear the prayers of intercession we offer in the unity of Your Holy Spirit, our advocate and comforter. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord, send Your Holy Spirit upon Your faithful people, that convicted of their sin they may also be convinced that the righteousness of Christ is theirs, and in such repentance and faith receive the things of Christ declared in this Supper: His holy body and precious blood for the forgiveness of sins. Unite us by Your Spirit of truth in faith and confession, and comfort us with the knowledge that this world’s prince is judged. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Dear Father, sorrow filled the hearts of the 12 at the thought of Christ’s ascension. Help us, rather, to rejoice that He sits on heaven’s throne and reigns among saints and angels. Comfort us in this communion of saints, until at last we join with them in Your glory. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

All these things and whatever else You know that we need, grant us, Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever. Amen.

God, please bless America!

Heavenly God Almighty,

You tell us to “not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:6).  We thank and praise You our God, You are faithful and trustworthy, full of love, grace and mercy.  Lead and grant Your wisdom to those who lead, legislate and judge in this and other countries.  Heal, comfort, and restore those suffering from weather, diseases, fires, warfare, accidents and other difficult situations.  Protect our military, our first responders, and medical personnel, our volunteers and citizens, and the people throughout the world.  Fill governmental offices with worthy men and women.  We pray these things as well as those that are unspoken in the strong and saving name of Jesus Christ. Amen!
