During the Sundays of Trinity we are reminded of the mystery and the glory of God. His thoughts are above our thoughts as far as the heavens are above the earth (Is.55:8-9). We cannot know His mind or be His counselor (Rom 11:34). Accordingly we receive in faith His counsel that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is the one true God. We also receive in faith His counsel that the very body and blood of Christ are present under the bread and wine for our forgiveness. As we receive Holy Communion today, the whole counsel of God moves us to determine confessional oneness for those who receive the sacrament together. For Scriptural reasons, we practice close communion. If you do not belong to a congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we invite you to join our communion fellowship. For details, please speak or make an appointment with Pastor Kane through the church office (319) 235-6705.

Take a moment to notice the * at the beginning of various portions of the order of service. The * indicates the place where it is inappropriate to enter or leave the sanctuary because it marks a time of prayer or respect for the Word of the Lord. Please be considerate of others around you by honoring these notations.

THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

Faith Trusts in Christ for Life Eternal

June 22, 2025

AS WE GATHER: When the beggar Lazarus died, he was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. For he was truly Abraham’s seed. Like Abraham, he believed in the Lord, and the Lord “counted it to him as righteousness” (Gen. 15:6). The name Lazarus means “God is my help.” The unnamed rich man, on the other hand, did not love and trust in God. For he evidently cared little for the beggar at his gate. And “he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen” (I John 4:20). He who loved and trusted in possessions and prestige died and was in torments in Hades (Luke 16:19-31). Repentance and faith are worked only through Moses and the prophets – that is, the Word of God, for it points us to Christ. Only through His death and resurrection are we brought the comfort of life everlasting.

*Prayer of the Church

Prayer of the Church—Responsive Form

Lord God, heavenly Father, You promise us an inheritance not because of Your law but because of Your promise to Abraham and to us. In Your grace, nourish us in the faith unto life eternal. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Lord God, You have given Matthew, our Synod president; Brian, our district president; David, our circuit visitor; and our pastor(s) so that we may hear Moses and the prophets and be convinced by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Make their proclamation fruitful among us in repentance and faith, that we may not fall into the torments of hades but be carried by the angels to Abraham’s side in heaven. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Lord God, be the defender and shield of all in need: the poor, the hungry and those without homes or proper employment. Provide for their needs, and give them hope in the face of their trials. Stir up in us fervent love for one another, that we would be charitable to bring care and comfort to those around us, since You have shown us perfect charity in Your Son. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Lord God, have mercy on those who desire the gift of children and yet remain childless. Help them to trust Your unfailing promises and, if it be Your will, satisfy the longing of their hearts with offspring to raise up in the fear and knowledge of You. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Lord God, Your Word teaches that a great army cannot save the king and a war horse is a false hope for salvation. Grant that our nation would not put its hope in the strength of our warriors, but in You. Bless and keep those who serve in our military, and use them as Your arm to guard and deliver us from all our enemies. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Lord God, give to Your servants all that is needed for this body and life. Heal, strengthen and comfort the sick, the suffering, the sorrowing and the dying, and hear the prayers of all who call upon Your saving name. Teach us to pray so that our hearts may not be undone by anxiety and fear but rejoice in Your grace sufficient for our every need. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Lord God, give repentance and faith to all who come to Your altar. Grant that we would not come seeking earthly food, but instead discern Your body and blood for the forgiveness of sins and receive it in the unity of a true confession. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, heavenly Father, we implore You to rule and govern our hearts by Your Holy Spirit, that we may not, like the rich man, hear Your Word in vain and become so devoted to things temporal that we forget things eternal. Grant that we may serve those who are in need readily and according to our ability, not defiling ourselves with carousing or pride. In trial and misfortune, keep us from despair, and let us trust in Your fatherly help and grace, that in faith and Christian patience we may overcome all things; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
